I live a strange life, all things considered.

My family have never really had much money. My dad worked hard but died young, my mom did what she could to get by. She did all sorts of work for terrible pay, before starting up a little house cleaning business.

The majority of her customers are incredibly rich, and are the kinds of people that we would never mix with. The majority are very white and a little racist – they're quite happy for the person who cleans their house to be black but they wouldn't want to be seen in public with the same people.

We understood, largely. Not only race but also class separated us, we understood that it was considered weird to hang out with the poor black people. But still, it made us a little sad.
